In the face of skyrocketing cocoa prices, Germany's love for chocolate remains unshaken. Despite a staggering 50% increase in cocoa costs, the demand for chocolate has only slightly dipped by 1.6% in 2024. German chocolate consumption per capita has even grown from 9 kg in 2018 to nearly 10 kg in 2023. Various factors contribute to this resilience, including poor cocoa harvests in West Africa and increased shipping expenses. Seasonal demand for festive items like chocolate advent calendars and St. Nicholas chocolates also plays a significant role.

The German chocolate industry has shown remarkable growth, producing over 1.14 million tons of chocolate in 2023, marking a 4.6% increase from previous years. This production is valued at an impressive €6.5 billion. Despite the high import prices for cocoa, which have nearly doubled due to scarcity, Germany continues to import substantial quantities. Côte d'Ivoire remains a primary supplier despite the challenges faced.

The price hikes have affected various chocolate products, with some Christmas chocolate items seeing a price increase of up to 50%. Other chocolate favorites, like milk and dark chocolate bars, have risen by 17%, and popular treats such as gingerbread hearts and domino stones have seen price increases of up to 32% and 12%, respectively.
