VW Faces Crisis: Job Security and Cost-Cutting at Odds

Volkswagen (VW) is currently embroiled in a crisis over job security and cost-cutting measures. Federal Minister Heil has emphasized the importance of preserving jobs at VW's headquarters in Wolfsburg, advocating for social partnerships to find equitable solutions in collective bargaining. The proposed cost-cutting measures include 10% wage cuts, potential plant closures, and layoffs, which have sparked widespread protests among employees. Betriebsratschefin Daniela Cavallo has called for compromises to prevent plant closures and job losses. She supports a future fund proposal by IG Metall that suggests exchanging wage increases for a commitment to retain jobs and sites. This proposal aims to address the financial challenges without resorting to drastic cuts.
