Albatross Record: Wisdom Lays an Egg in Hawaii
The 74-year-old female Laysan albatross Wisdom, the oldest known wild bird, has laid an egg again on Midway Atoll. Laysan albatrosses are monogamous and incubate the egg for two months before the chicks fledge after five to six months. After Wisdom's long-time partner Akeakamai was no longer seen, she has paired up with a new male. Wisdom has been living on Midway Atoll since 2006 and has already laid around 60 eggs and raised up to 30 chicks there. She was first banded as an adult in 1956.
