In a significant crackdown, an Iraqi-Kurdish smuggling network in Germany was dismantled, leading to a smuggler receiving a 15-year prison sentence.
The interior ministers from Germany, the UK, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, along with EU Commission and Europol representatives, are collaborating within the Calais Group to enhance their fight against smuggling crimes. This partnership includes sharing intelligence, financial investigations, and heightened border controls to curb secondary migration, notably at the Dutch-German border.
Moreover, Germany and the UK have signed an action plan to combat these illegal activities, committing to high-level investigative measures and cross-border cooperation. The urgency of this initiative is underscored by the tragic toll of at least 72 deaths in recent Channel crossings.
