Chinese Gold Mining Threatens Congo's Heritage Reserve

The Okapi Wildlife Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site in eastern Congo, faces severe threats from illegal gold mining by Kimia Mining Investment. This Chinese-run operation, known as the Muchacha mine, has encroached upon the reserve due to altered boundaries.

Toxic chemicals like mercury and cyanide used in mining are devastating the environment, polluting land and water, and displacing local communities dependent on the reserve's resources. Despite a government memo to halt all mining activities, the timeline and execution remain uncertain.

The reserve's boundaries were altered through obscure changes by Congo's mining registry and the ICCN. Military control over these mines, backed by powerful interests, further complicates the situation.

UNESCO has demanded a report by February to clarify and address the boundary issues. Local residents express frustration over the double standard, as they are prohibited from mining while foreign companies are allowed to operate.

Conservationists and civil groups accuse government officials of moving boundaries for personal gain.
