The previous year saw a more significant hike of 4.57%, outpacing inflation. Despite this positive trend, the upcoming adjustments mean that the initial pension increase for 2025 may feel diminished by 1.2% due to the retrospective nature of the care contribution increase. Approximately 22 million pensioners will benefit from the adjustments, although the final figures will depend on the economic situation and wage developments.
As of January 1, 2024, the number of pensioners in Germany rose slightly to 1.406 million, with an average pension of 3,240 euros. The financial outlay for pensions and survivor benefits remains substantial, amounting to 63.4 billion euros, or about 1.5% of the country’s GDP. Teachers represent the largest group of pensioners, and while new retirements in education have decreased significantly, the overall trend shows a steady increase in the pensioner population.
