Bavaria's Gingerbread Production Reigns Supreme

Bavaria remains the cornerstone of German gingerbread production, contributing an impressive 72.2% of the total output. In 2023, this region produced 62,720 tons of gingerbread from companies with at least 20 employees.

Despite its dominance, Bavaria experienced a slight decline from the previous year, where its share stood at 74%. Notably, these statistics do not account for smaller businesses, which may also play a role in the overall gingerbread landscape.

Gingerbread, a beloved sweet treat, continues to hold a significant place in German culinary traditions. Meanwhile, North Rhine-Westphalia has seen a rise in its production of Lebkuchen and honey cakes, increasing by 442 tons this year.

This region now accounts for 21.2% of national production, illustrating the diverse gingerbread scene across Germany. Overall, Bavaria's stronghold remains, but the shifting dynamics in other regions merit attention.
