The rare Bahamonde beaked whale has been discovered off the coast of
New Zealand, sparking significant interest among researchers and indigenous communities. This species, scientifically known as Mesoplodon traversii, was first identified in 1874, with only a few specimens found since. The recent carcass, which measured five meters in length and weighed 1.3 tons, provides new insights into the whale's anatomy and evolutionary history.
Researchers, in collaboration with the Maori, have examined the whale's unique features, including its tiny, underdeveloped teeth and nine-chambered stomach containing squid and worm remnants. The whale also exhibited injuries, including a broken jaw, raising questions about its cause of death.
