Germany is currently grappling with record-high electricity prices, driven by a "Dunkelflaute"—a period with minimal wind and solar power generation. This phenomenon has forced companies like the Feralpi electric steel plant in Riesa to halt operations, leading to significant financial losses. The soaring prices at the Paris Epex electricity exchange have reached unprecedented levels, with spot market prices briefly exceeding 936 euros per megawatt-hour.

Experts highlight that these price spikes are increasingly common during the autumn-winter season, pointing to a lack of flexibility in the energy grid as a core issue. The absence of sufficient reserve capacities, such as conventional power plants, batteries, and improved grid infrastructure, exacerbates the problem. As a result, production targets suffer, and industries face disruptions.

Despite these challenges, most private consumers remain insulated from immediate impacts due to fixed-rate energy contracts. However, some businesses and consumers opting for dynamic pricing models are directly affected, prompting calls for better protective measures against volatile market conditions.

Criticism has emerged from Sweden, where interconnected electricity markets mean that price fluctuations in Germany can affect Swedish consumers. Swedish officials have criticized Germany's energy policies, particularly the decision to phase out nuclear power without establishing regional price zones.
