Tax Relief and Child Allowance: A Renewed Coalition Effort

The former traffic light coalition, comprising the SPD, Greens, and FDP, has reached a significant agreement aimed at providing tax relief. This initiative focuses on alleviating the effects of bracket creep and enhancing child allowances. FDP leaders Christian Lindner and Christian Dürr expressed their support during discussions in the Bundestag, highlighting a collaborative spirit among the coalition partners. The proposed measures include a reduction in cold progression, an increase in child allowances by five euros to 255 euros, and a rise in the child tax allowance by sixty euros to 6,672 euros. These changes are expected to provide a financial reprieve of approximately 306 euros for families with an annual income of 60,000 euros. The coalition has also outlined plans for further adjustments in 2026, reflecting a commitment to ongoing fiscal support for working families, businesses, and the industrial sector.

However, this will require approval from both the Bundestag and the Bundesrat, underscoring the complexities of coalition governance.
