Israel is currently repositioning its 98th Division, comprising 10,000 to 15,000 soldiers, from Lebanon to the war-torn Gaza Strip. This move comes in the context of ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, which includes a 60-day withdrawal agreement. Simultaneously, indications suggest a potential ceasefire in Gaza, aimed at halting the conflict with Hamas and extremist groups.
Recent discussions have been taking place in Qatar, where Israeli officials, led by Defense Minister Israel Katz, are negotiating terms for a ceasefire and the release of hostages held by Hamas. The conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with over 1,200 fatalities and 251 individuals captured. Currently, 96 hostages remain in captivity, with 34 reported deceased. Notably, a temporary ceasefire in November 2023 allowed for the release of 105 hostages, alongside the rescue of an additional seven by Israeli forces.
Minister Katz emphasized that negotiations regarding the hostages have reached an unprecedented level of advancement in over a year, highlighting the urgency and complexity of the situation. The discussions are particularly focused on reconciling proposals from the United States, Egypt, and other parties involved in the protracted conflict. Despite earlier rounds of negotiations being hampered by disagreements over Israel's military presence in Gaza, there remains a cautious optimism about the possibility of achieving a more stable ceasefire.
