Ford is initiating a significant recall of nearly 770,000 diesel vehicles globally, with around 164,000 affected in Germany alone. This action arises from issues with the diesel particulate filter that have led to increased particulate emissions, causing these vehicles to fail exhaust tests. The recall includes models manufactured between 2014 and 2020, such as the Fiesta, Focus, and Mondeo.
To address these concerns, Ford will update the calibration of the diesel particulate filter and replace any defective filters as necessary. The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) has confirmed that a new measurement method for particle count will be implemented starting July 2023, while existing opacity measurements for Euro 5 diesel vehicles will continue.
Although diesel particulate filters typically last between 120,000 and 240,000 kilometers, reconditioning may serve as a viable alternative to complete replacement. Ford is proactively informing customers and will manage the recall process through designated workshops that will recalibrate the filters, check their condition, and replace them when required. In addition to Ford, other manufacturers like Volvo and Mercedes are also facing similar challenges with their diesel vehicles.
With this recall, Ford aims to enhance compliance with environmental standards and ensure the reliability and performance of their diesel models. A dedicated hotline has been established for affected customers to seek assistance and further information.
