Ifo President Clemens Fuest describes the economic weakness as chronic, with minimal growth in Germany’s gross domestic product and no significant recovery in sight by year’s end.
The situation is exacerbated by external factors, including the potential economic impact of Donald Trump's return to U.S. politics. His policies, particularly proposed tariffs on European imports, could severely affect Germany’s export-driven economy. The automotive industry is especially vulnerable, grappling with structural changes and a shift towards electromobility.
Economic forecasts for 2025 remain grim, with experts predicting stagnation or minimal growth of 0.2%. Investment intentions are notably negative, and questions linger over the effectiveness of potential European Central Bank interest rate cuts. Meanwhile, the construction sector shows some resilience, but overall, the German economy teeters on the edge of recession.
The economic climate struggles are further reflected in rising insolvency rates, particularly impacting small and medium-sized enterprises.
