In Rösrath, a special-needs school has been closed as a precautionary measure following the Mpox infection of two children from a local family. The variant, Clade 1b, is known for its potential to cause more severe symptoms compared to Clade 2b. Mpox, primarily spread through skin-to-skin contact, presents with symptoms including skin rash, fever, and pain. Although the disease is considered mildly contagious, it poses a higher risk to infants, young children, and immunocompromised individuals.

The health department is actively monitoring contact persons and has recommended vaccination for those at higher risk. While there is no travel vaccination advisory, the Standing Committee on Vaccination (Stiko) suggests immunization for vulnerable groups. Despite the presence of around 3,800 cases of Clade 2b in Germany, no fatalities have been reported.

The affected family, including four members, is in quarantine, and contact tracing is underway. As the school transitions to distance learning, authorities stress the importance of awareness and prevention to curb further spread. This incident marks the first detection of the Clade 1b variant in Germany, with previous cases predominantly mild in nature.
