South Korea's Political Turmoil: President Yoon's Boycott and Impeachment Battle

South Korea finds itself in a political crisis as President Yoon Suk-yeol faces impeachment proceedings while refusing to cooperate with law enforcement authorities. Temporarily removed from power by parliament, Yoon's duties have been taken over by Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, pending a decision from the Constitutional Court. The court is set to deliberate on the impeachment on December 27, with Yoon promising to defend himself publicly.

Central to the charges against Yoon are allegations of sedition and abuse of power, following his controversial imposition of martial law. This move, intended to counter 'anti-state forces,' has plunged the nation into its worst political turmoil in decades. Yoon's legal team argues that the declaration of martial law does not meet the criteria for insurrection.

Despite being summoned by the country's corruption watchdog, Yoon has failed to appear, prompting discussions of a potential arrest warrant. Investigations by the prosecution and a joint committee are underway, with Yoon facing severe penalties, including life imprisonment or the death penalty if convicted.

As the Constitutional Court considers the impeachment, it has requested Yoon to provide documents related to the martial law decree and cabinet meetings. Meanwhile, Yoon remains under an international travel ban. The court has six months to reach a decision, during which Han Duck-soo continues to serve as acting president. Should Yoon be impeached, South Korea will have to hold an election for a new president within 60 days of the court's ruling.
