This alarming situation is attributed to the widespread use of coal and firewood for heating during winter, resulting in thick smog that blankets the city. Residents, like Hajra Subasic, experience difficulty breathing and speaking due to the pollution levels.

Experts highlight the serious health risks associated with prolonged exposure to such polluted air, including potential life-shortening effects. Poor urban planning and ineffective governmental measures have exacerbated the crisis, leaving Sarajevo struggling with the environmental challenge.

Despite promises to improve environmental standards, the region's attempts remain insufficient, as similar issues persist in nearby areas like Belgrade, Serbia. The situation calls for urgent and effective action to protect public health and ensure sustainable living conditions.
