Call for Peaceful Reorganization in Syria Post-Assad

The recent political shifts in Syria have prompted significant international reactions, particularly from Turkey and Iran. Following the fall of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has advocated for a peaceful reorganization in Syria. Speaking at the D-8 summit in Cairo, Erdogan emphasized the need for reconciliation and the establishment of a Syria free from terrorism, where diverse religious and ethnic groups can coexist peacefully. Erdogan also stressed the importance of maintaining Syria's territorial integrity.

Turkey, alongside pro-Turkish militias, controls significant portions of northern Syria and has intensified military operations against Kurdish regions following Assad's ousting. Erdogan's call includes the eradication of both IS and the Kurdish YPG militia, viewed by Ankara as extensions of the PKK. Meanwhile, Turkey has absorbed around three million Syrian refugees and seeks to facilitate their return.

Iranian President Massud Peseschkian, attending the D-8 meeting as the first Iranian leader in Egypt since 2013, echoed the call for preventing further harm to suffering populations in Syria, Lebanon, and Gaza. Iran, a former close ally of Assad, continues to influence the region through support for groups like Hezbollah.

The D-8 organization, founded in 1997, aims to strengthen collaboration among member states, which include Turkey, Iran, Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The ongoing situation in Syria remains a focal point, with international efforts aimed at fostering dialogue and stability in the post-Assad era. As global powers engage in discussions, the hope is for a negotiated peace and a stable future for Syria.
