New Measures Against Domestic Violence in Germany

The Federal Council has endorsed a significant initiative aimed at combating domestic violence through the implementation of electronic ankle monitors. This measure, to be enshrined in the Violence Protection Act, will enable victims to receive alerts when the perpetrator approaches their vicinity.

The ankle monitor will be limited to a duration of three months, accompanied by fines for any violations. Although this technology is already in use for probation purposes, many believe it does not adequately protect victims.

With over 700 individuals facing domestic violence daily in Germany, the urgency for enhanced protective measures is clear. The initiative marks a crucial step towards improving the safety and welfare of those affected by domestic violence, reflecting a growing commitment to address this pressing social issue.
