After 17 years of construction and a 12-year delay, the European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) at Flamanville, France, has finally been connected to the grid. This marks the first time in 25 years that a new nuclear reactor has commenced operation in France, a fact highlighted by EDF's CEO Luc Rémont. President Emmanuel Macron lauded this as a significant moment for the nation, emphasizing how nuclear power can enhance France's competitiveness and contribute to climate protection.
Originally slated for completion in 2012, the Flamanville EPR faced numerous technical challenges and setbacks, leading to a dramatic increase in costs. The project's expenses are currently estimated at 13.2 billion euros, a figure nearly four times the initial budget. Despite these hurdles, the reactor is now the most powerful in France, boasting a capacity of 1600 megawatts. Initially, it will operate at 20% capacity, with full operation expected by next summer.
Globally, the Flamanville EPR is only the fourth of its kind, joining reactors in Finland and China. The French government remains committed to nuclear energy, planning to construct 14 additional reactors based on a simplified EPR model. This new development underscores France's role as a key player in the nuclear energy sector, with nuclear power remaining a cornerstone of its energy strategy.
