Equal Access to Medical Appointments Demanded by Health Insurers

Health insurance bodies in Germany are urging the next government to address the disparity in appointment scheduling between privately insured and public health insurance patients. Currently, private patients often receive preferential treatment, securing appointments much quicker than those with statutory insurance. Stefanie Stoff-Ahnis, the deputy chair of the statutory health insurance association, has called for legislative action to prohibit this discrimination.

Stoff-Ahnis emphasizes that 90% of Germans are insured under public health schemes, yet they frequently endure longer waiting times for medical appointments compared to private patients. She argues that the appointment system should prioritize medical necessity rather than insurance status. This change, she insists, would ensure fairness and equitable access to healthcare services.

The association also proposes a mandatory requirement for clinics to publish available appointment slots online, ensuring transparency and equal opportunity for all patients. The call for reform is set against a backdrop of rising additional contributions to health insurance funds, which may further strain the current system.

Political responses have been mixed, with some parties advocating for a unified insurance system to eliminate discrepancies. However, these proposals face criticism from private insurance representatives who view them as detrimental to their interests. Nonetheless, the demand for change reflects a growing consensus that healthcare access should be based on need rather than financial privilege.
