Russian Cargo Ship Sinking Investigated as Terrorist Act
A Russian cargo ship owned by Oboronlogistika, a company linked to the Russian Ministry of Defense, sank in the Mediterranean Sea following a series of explosions. The vessel, named Ursa Major, was transporting port cranes and parts for icebreakers from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok.
The Russian authorities suspect a terrorist act after reports of three consecutive blasts on board. Out of the 16 crew members, 14 have been rescued and brought to the Spanish port of Cartagena, while two remain missing.
The incident has heightened tensions as it coincides with other aggressive actions, including Russian drone attacks on Ukraine during Christmas. The United States, under President Biden, strongly condemned these attacks, pledging continued support to Ukraine.
The situation underscores the fragile geopolitics in the region, with international focus on Russia's military engagements and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
