This development follows Ukraine's decision not to renew the expiring gas transit agreement with Russia, a move that threatens to have broad implications for several European nations.
The Slovak Prime Minister has expressed concerns about the drastic potential outcomes for Europe if the gas transit halts. Despite these worries, Slovakia's Economy Minister, Denisa Sakova, has reassured the public that there is currently no immediate risk of a gas shortage.
Ukraine's decision to stop the flow of Russian gas is seen as a strategic move to financially weaken Russia, which has been embroiled in a conflict with Ukraine. This transit cessation marks the end of a long-standing arrangement that has been in place since 1991, affecting countries like Slovakia, Hungary, and Moldova.
While some nations, such as Hungary, continue to receive Russian gas through alternative routes like the TurkStream pipeline, others have diversified their energy sources. Austria, for example, has prepared by securing supplies through Germany and Italy, alongside its storage facilities.
Russia's halt in gas exports via Ukraine is a significant economic blow, as it loses a vital market and faces substantial financial losses. In response, the European Union has been seeking alternative energy suppliers, reducing its reliance on Russian gas imports, which now constitute less than 10% of EU gas imports as of 2023.
