Short-Finned Squid Discovery on Baltic Coast

A short-finned squid, Illex coindetii, was discovered dead on the steep coast of Schleswig-Holstein near Hohwacht Stakendorf. Initially posted by a woman on social media in early December, the squid was later found by an amateur paleontologist.

Experts from the Kiel Geomar Helmholtz Center, including biologist Thorsten Reusch, suggest that this species has established populations in the North Sea. Deep-water currents might be facilitating their migration into the Baltic Sea.

This squid species is known for its ecological flexibility and wide natural range, which supports its movement into new habitats. Historically, Illex coindetii was a rare visitor in the North Sea, but now seems to be more prevalent, possibly due to changing environmental conditions.

Dead squid found on the Baltic Sea coast

An amateur paleontologist found a dead Illex coindetii or short-finned squid on the steep coast near Hohwacht Stakendorf in Schleswig-Holstein. A woman had already posted the find on a social network at the beginning of December, before the amateur paleontologist found the animal a day later. According to experts from the Kiel Geomar Helmholtz Center, including Thorsten Reusch, these squid can now have their own stocks in the North Sea and reach the Baltic Sea through deep-water currents.

Dead Squid Discovered on the Baltic Sea Coast

An amateur paleontologist found a mature, approximately 20-centimeter-long shortfin squid (Illex coindetii) on the steep coast of Schleswig-Holstein near Hohwacht. According to Thorsten Reusch from the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Illex coindetii was found only as a stray in the North Sea 100 years ago, but has since been able to establish its own stocks there. The migration to the Baltic Sea is likely explained by deep-water inflows through the Belts. Illex coindetii is a..
