Von der Leyen's Health Halts EU Engagements

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, has been forced to cancel her scheduled engagements due to a severe case of pneumonia. The 66-year-old leader, who recently began her second five-year term, is temporarily stepping back from her duties outside her hometown of Hannover. Despite her illness, von der Leyen remains in close contact with her team and continues to fulfill her responsibilities from home.

Among the postponed events are a significant speech in Lisbon and a trip to Gdansk, planned in conjunction with Poland's presidency of the EU Council. The EU spokesperson confirmed that these commitments would be rescheduled at a later date. Von der Leyen's health setback comes shortly after her reaffirmation as the first female president of the EU Commission, a position she holds with considerable influence.

The spokesperson, Stefan De Keersmaeker, expressed optimism about her recovery, indicating that von der Leyen might return to full capacity by the middle of the month.
