The Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is currently circulating in China, alongside other respiratory viruses like SARS-CoV-2, RSV, and the seasonal flu. HMPV is a familiar pathogen, typically causing mild cold symptoms.
However, it can lead to more severe conditions such as bronchitis or pneumonia, especially in the elderly and those with weakened immune systems, such as cancer patients. Despite an increase in cases, the China CDC reports that the infection rate remains within the normal range, with no emergency situation declared.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reassures the public that HMPV is neither new nor particularly dangerous. Hospitals in China are less burdened than in previous years, and the spread of respiratory illnesses is reportedly milder.
The virus spreads through droplets, aerosols, and direct contact, similar to influenza and COVID-19. General hygiene remains crucial as no vaccine exists for HMPV.
While there have been reports of rising pneumonia cases due to HMPV and other pathogens, the WHO underlines that an outbreak is not confirmed, and the situation remains manageable.
