Citizen Science Counts Birds for Conservation

The annual bird-counting initiative led by Nabu and LBV invites 130,000 participants to observe and document bird species. This event is vital for understanding shifts in bird populations and behaviors.

Participant engagement is crucial for gathering data on Nordic birds like the siskin and brambling and observing changes in migratory patterns of species such as the starling and house redstart. Previously migratory birds now often remain in local areas during winter, a change possibly linked to climate factors.

This participatory action, known as 'Stunde der Wintervögel,' runs from January 10th to 12th and aims to inspire public interest and involvement in bird conservation. By counting birds like sparrows, tits, and blackbirds, participants contribute to crucial insights into the effects of climate change on bird distribution and behaviors.

The initiative underscores the idea that knowledge fosters protection and has successfully engaged citizens for 15 years.
