In Rotthalmünster, Lower Bavaria, a new earthworm species named Helodrilus bavaricus has been identified. Led by biologist Roswitha Walter, the discovery took place on a farmer's field known for its soil-conserving cultivation methods, which support a high worm population density.

Researchers counted around 600 earthworms per square meter, quadrupling the Bavarian average for fields. This species is believed to be a relic from the Ice Age, distinguished by its pale pink color and size of approximately five centimeters when mature.

The discovery was published in the scientific journal 'Opuscula Zoologica.' Helodrilus bavaricus joins the list of 50 earthworm species in Germany, with eight different species found specifically in Rotthalmünster. Earthworms play a crucial role in soil aeration, nutrient cycling, and erosion prevention.

This finding underscores the importance of sustainable farming practices that enhance biodiversity and ecological balance.
