Germany Faces Pharmacy Shortage Crisis

Germany is experiencing a significant decline in the number of pharmacies, reaching its lowest level since 1978. The Federal Association of German Pharmacists' Associations (ABDA) attributes this downturn to several factors. The ABDA President has issued a warning about the potential risks to medicine supply, emphasizing the need for policy intervention. With a 3% decrease in pharmacies from the previous year, Germany now finds itself below the EU average in terms of pharmacy density. The closures pose a threat to patient access to essential medications, highlighting a critical need for reform and investment in the sector.

The issue has also sparked political debates, with calls for measures to address the chronic underfunding and to support a sustainable future for pharmacies.
