Addressing the Forensic Psychiatric Bed Shortage

Lower Saxony is taking significant steps to tackle the ongoing shortage of forensic psychiatric beds, planning to add 200 by 2027. Currently, 46 offenders, who are either substance-dependent or mentally ill, await placement. A joint initiative with Hamburg will see another 200 beds created, with a financial commitment of 120 million euros.

The expansion includes 25 places in a day clinic and 50 in general psychiatry. However, the region faces challenges due to a shortage of skilled personnel in medical and nursing fields, which complicates the implementation of these plans.

The current capacity in Lower Saxony stands at 1,287 beds, highlighting the urgency of addressing this critical issue.
