Rising Health Insurance Contributions: A Looming Concern

The CEO of Techniker Krankenkasse, Jens Baas, has raised alarms regarding the potential rise of health insurance contributions to 20% in the upcoming legislative period. Currently, the average contribution across statutory health insurance funds stands at 17.5%, with TK proposing a slight reduction to 17.05%.

Recent increases in contributions have already been observed at the start of 2023, with a 2.91% hike. Baas emphasizes that without significant reforms, costs related to hospitals, medications, and treatments will continue to escalate, compelling further increases.

The GKV-Spitzenverband supports this outlook, predicting additional hikes due to rising deficits among the 94 health funds. Furthermore, insured individuals now hold a special right to terminate their contracts amid these changes.

Baas also criticizes the ongoing debate about eliminating wage continuity on the first day of illness as a distraction from the pressing issue of soaring health insurance contributions.
