Unlocking Climate Secrets from Ancient Ice

A groundbreaking discovery in Antarctica has unveiled a 1.2 million-year-old ice core, the longest continuous climate record to date. Drilled at a high altitude of 3,200 meters, this remarkable core offers unprecedented insights into past ice age cycles and the intricate relationship between carbon cycles and temperature.

Funded by the European Commission and executed by the Alfred Wegener Institute, this research promises to enhance our understanding of climate dynamics. The ice core, retrieved at frigid temperatures of -50°C, will undergo further analysis in Bremerhaven.
