Urgent Call for Healthcare Reform in Germany

Bundesgesundheitsminister Karl Lauterbach has issued a stark warning about the relentless rise in healthcare costs in Germany, urging the need for structural reforms. He emphasizes that without significant changes, the financial burden will continue to escalate. Lauterbach highlights the critical role of preventive medicine, stating that current efforts to address diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular issues are insufficient. He asserts that future legislation must focus on improving preventive care, which he believes is essential for controlling costs and enhancing the quality of the healthcare system.

In addition to preventive measures, Lauterbach is optimistic about the potential benefits of the electronic patient record (ePA), set to be tested in three pilot regions starting January 15. This digital tool aims to streamline patient consultations, allowing for telemedicine services that could reduce in-person visits by up to a third. Such innovations could significantly lower costs related to the one billion annual doctor-patient interactions.

Furthermore, Lauterbach expresses disappointment over the lack of progress on the proposed Healthy Heart Act and highlights the inadequate treatment of hypertension in Germany, affecting a quarter of patients. He stresses the urgency of reforms to prevent the continued rise in healthcare expenses. As the current coalition government faces challenges, Lauterbach remains firm in his belief that without decisive action, both the financial strain and the quality of care will suffer.
