The electronic patient record (ePA) is set to become a significant milestone in Germany's healthcare digitalization. While insured individuals have the option to delete their ePA, the system's opt-out nature has attracted criticism from privacy advocates.
Despite these concerns, the ePA promises several advantages, such as reducing unnecessary paperwork, allowing quick access to health data, and potentially improving medication safety through electronic prescriptions. Yet, the security issues highlighted by experts, notably the potential risks identified by the CCC, remain a pressing concern.
The German Ministry of Health assures that safety measures are in place, yet critics argue that the central storage of sensitive data could be vulnerable to misuse or cyberattacks. Furthermore, the lack of a detailed access control system raises questions about patient data privacy.
As the rollout proceeds, the success of the ePA will largely depend on resolving these security concerns and ensuring that both healthcare providers and patients are adequately informed and prepared for this digital shift.
