Lithuania, a member of NATO and the European Union, is taking significant steps to bolster its national defence in response to the increasing threat from Russia. By 2026, Lithuania plans to raise its defence spending to 5-6% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This move aims to secure advanced military equipment, including Leopard tanks and air defence systems, ensuring heightened security for the nation.
The decision aligns with broader international expectations, following former US President Donald Trump's call for NATO allies to increase their defence budgets to 5% of GDP. Currently, 24 out of 32 NATO countries have reached the existing 2% spending target. Lithuania's commitment to surpass this threshold underscores its proactive stance on national security.
The urgency of this decision is accentuated by Russia's aggressive actions, particularly its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Lithuania, sharing borders with both Russia and Belarus, perceives a clear and present danger, prompting this unprecedented increase in military expenditure.
With a population of under three million, Lithuania's new centre-left government has made security a top priority. This intensified focus on defence spending will position Lithuania as one of NATO's leading countries in terms of GDP percentage allocated to military needs.
This strategic move reflects a broader trend among NATO member states, with countries like Poland already investing over 4% of their GDP in defence.
