Rising Health Insurance Contributions: A Call for Reform

The escalating costs of statutory health insurance in Germany have become a pressing concern. By 2026, contributions are expected to rise to 18%, with projections indicating a further increase to 20% by 2035. This upward trend is largely driven by increased expenses, including those associated with the hospital reform and the transformation funds.

DAK-Gesundheit, one of the prominent health insurance companies, highlights the urgent need to halt this contribution spiral. The head of the company emphasizes the importance of implementing an immediate program that involves a higher federal subsidy. This measure aims to ensure that contributors are not unfairly burdened with costs that should be covered by taxpayers.

In addition to the standard contribution, an average additional charge of 2.9% further exacerbates the financial strain on insured individuals. The projections also suggest potential rises in contributions for pension, nursing, and unemployment insurance, potentially bringing the total social insurance contributions to 49.7%.

DAK-Gesundheit's CEO, Andreas Storm, has called for swift and decisive political action. He urges that the issue be prioritized in coalition negotiations and advocates for a restructuring of the hospital reform’s funding. The DAK underscores the necessity of stabilizing contributions through effective income and expenditure management.
