Berlin Transport Faces Major Strike

Berlin's public transport system is bracing for disruption as the union Verdi has announced a 24-hour warning strike on Monday, affecting buses, trams, and U-Bahn services. This strike stems from ongoing disputes over wage negotiations between Verdi and the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG). The union is demanding a monthly wage increase of 750 euros, a shift allowance of 300 euros, and a 13th monthly salary for BVG employees.

Verdi's decision to strike comes after accusing the employers of employing a "delay strategy," as the first negotiation round yielded no offer from the BVG. The transport company, acknowledging a need to address wage disparities, plans to present an offer in the next negotiation session scheduled for January 31st. Despite this acknowledgment, the BVG describes the strike as an "unnecessary escalation" and "disproportionate."

The BVG, a leading company with a 37.5-hour workweek and full pay compensation, faces criticism for its handling of these negotiations. Verdi argues that the strike is a necessary step to demonstrate the seriousness of their demands ahead of further talks.

As the strike looms, passengers are advised to seek alternative transport methods, such as cars, e-scooters, or services like Uber. Meanwhile, the S-Bahn, operated by Deutsche Bahn, will continue to run as usual. With six more negotiation sessions planned until April 10th, tensions remain high as both sides strive to reach a resolution that balances fair compensation with financial feasibility.
