European Union is making significant strides in its transition to renewable energy. By 2024, nearly half of the EU's electricity will be generated from renewable sources such as solar, wind, hydropower, and biomass, according to an analysis by the think tank Ember. This marks a notable shift from reliance on fossil fuels, which will account for only 29% of the energy mix, down from 39% in 2019.
Solar energy has emerged as a leading force, surpassing coal for the first time by covering 11% of the EU's electricity demand, compared to coal's 10%. This development is part of a broader trend that has seen solar power installations increase significantly across the continent, driven by initiatives like the European Green Deal.
The decline in fossil fuel dependency is also attributed to the EU's strategic response to geopolitical tensions, such as reducing reliance on Russian gas following the invasion of Ukraine. Since the launch of the Green Deal in 2019, the EU has saved billions in fossil fuel imports, enhancing its energy independence and cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
Nuclear energy remains a stable component, contributing 24% to the energy mix, while gas-fired power generation continues to decrease. This transition reflects the EU's commitment to sustainable energy practices and its role as a leader in global climate efforts, especially following the US's withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement.
