Germany's Key Role in Russian LNG Imports to the EU

In 2023, Germany played a pivotal role in the importation of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) into the European Union, spearheaded by the state-owned energy firm Sefe. This company notably imported over 5.6 billion cubic meters of LNG, primarily through the French port of Dunkirk.

Despite the European Union's sanctions on investments in Russian LNG projects, around 20 billion cubic meters of Russian LNG were imported into the EU. The majority of LNG imports to Europe, however, originated from the USA, with Spain, the Netherlands, and Italy being the largest importers.

Russian LNG comprised between 3% and 9.2% of Germany's gas imports in 2023. The EU's continued diversification of its energy sources reflects a strategic move to strengthen its energy security while balancing diplomatic relations, notably with the United States and Russia.

As the EU progresses toward its climate goals, LNG imports have begun to decline, influenced by a shift to renewable energy sources and reduced overall gas consumption.
