Proposed Tax Cut to Lower Electricity Costs

A coalition of German political parties, including the Greens, FDP, AfD, Union, and SPD, is advocating for a reduction in electricity tax to the EU minimum. This move could reduce electricity costs by 7%, providing significant relief to households. The current electricity tax stands at 2.05 cents per kWh, whereas the EU minimum is much lower at 0.1 cents per kWh.

By implementing this tax reduction, families, two-person households, and single-person households could save up to 93 euros annually. Despite these potential savings, electricity prices remain 5% higher than their pre-energy crisis levels. Energy expert Thorsten Storck from Verivox supports this initiative, considering it a strategic step to mitigate household expenses burdened by high taxes and levies.

If enacted, this tax cut could lead to an overall consumer relief of approximately three billion euros. The proposal not only promises immediate financial relief but also aims to permanently lower household electricity costs, supporting economic stability during a challenging period for energy consumers.
