This alarming figure represents 19.6% of the elderly population, marking an increase of 1.2 percentage points. The poverty threshold for a single-person household is set at 1,378 euros, while for families, it rises to 2,893 euros. The stark rise in poverty among seniors has prompted calls for a pension system modeled after Austria's, which is believed to provide more substantial support.
The urgency of addressing this issue is underscored by the planned Pension Package II, although its future remains uncertain amidst differing party proposals. The traffic light coalition had aimed for what was touted as the largest pension reform since Bismarck, yet the growing number of impoverished retirees raises questions about the effectiveness of existing policies.
Sahra Wagenknecht, the head of the BSW, has described the pension situation as a 'megaproblem', criticizing the current pension balance of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) as shameful. She advocates for a more inclusive system that would require contributions from civil servants and self-employed individuals, potentially increasing average monthly pensions by 800 euros.
