This initiative places inexperienced personnel in key governmental roles, including access to sensitive data in agencies like the CIA. DOGE has already dismantled USAID, laid off tens of thousands of civil servants, and accessed significant health insurance data from Medicare and Medicaid.
The unit's actions have sparked controversy, exemplified by the resignation of Marko Elez, a DOGE staffer, following the exposure of his racist social media posts. Additionally, the head of the rebranded US Digital Service, Ted Carstensen, opted to resign rather than continue under the new regime. There is also public outcry over DOGE's infiltration of the NOAA, raising concerns about the potential privatization of weather forecasts, which could jeopardize public safety.
Despite resistance from Congress and union leaders, attempts to restrain Musk's sweeping changes have thus far been unsuccessful. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing debates about the ethical and security implications of DOGE's influence.
