EU Approves UV-Treated Insect Powder for Food

Starting Monday, the European Union permits the use of UV-treated mealworm powder in food products, enhancing their vitamin D content. This initiative, initially exclusive to a French company, positions insects as a sustainable, protein-rich food source.

However, there are inherent allergy risks associated with insect consumption. Consumers will have the option to choose such products, which will undergo rigorous scientific evaluation prior to approval.

Manufacturers must secure authorization and clearly label the use of insect ingredients. Despite the nutritional benefits, consumer skepticism remains, particularly among older demographics, making transparency and safety a priority in this new food landscape.
