Mealworm Powder Approved for Food Use in the EU

The European Union has approved mealworm powder as a novel food ingredient, allowing its incorporation into various products such as bread, cakes, pasta, cheese, and fruit compotes. This authorization, granted to Nutri'Earth for five years, follows a safety endorsement from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

With a protein content of 50-55%, mealworm powder presents a sustainable alternative to traditional meat sources. However, foods containing this ingredient must include an allergy warning.

The decision marks a significant step in diversifying food sources and promoting sustainability within the European food sector.
