At the same time, Russia has released American citizen Marc Fogel, who had been detained since 2021. This act of goodwill has been praised by former US President Donald Trump, who views it as a positive step towards ending the war in Ukraine. Trump, known for his controversial stance on the conflict, has suggested that Ukraine might someday be part of Russia and has demanded the return of financial aid in the form of rare minerals.
Zelensky is set to meet with US Vice President JD Vance and other American envoys, signaling potential diplomatic openings between Washington and Moscow. As both sides grapple with military engagements, including Russia's recent capture of a village in Donetsk and bombings in Sumy, the diplomatic landscape remains complex. The talks are expected to address security concerns, with NATO membership and peacekeeping deployments as potential topics of discussion.
