Strengthening Flood Defenses in Brandenburg

The recent storm surge in Schönhagen has underscored the urgent need for robust flood defenses. The dike, severely damaged, is undergoing a comprehensive 3 million euro repair, with plans to complete it by Easter.

A significant 700-meter section is being reinforced with 20,000 tons of stones. Local students are actively engaged in learning about these vital structures and their adaptation to climate change.

Additionally, Brandenburg is committing 26 million euros annually to flood protection initiatives across the region, including improvements along the Elbe and other waterways. Since 1997, the state has invested a staggering 882 million euros, demonstrating a long-term commitment to safeguarding communities from natural disasters.
