Otters Resurge in Saarland

The return of otters to Saarland is a triumph for local wildlife conservation. First spotted in 2022 via a wildlife camera, these strictly protected animals have since established themselves in the region. Their presence is hailed as a success by the Ministry of the Environment. Hardy Welker of the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union has documented numerous sightings, highlighting a family of four otters.

Despite the otters thriving, the Nature Conservation Union insists on enhanced protection measures. Although designated as a Natura2000 area, the habitat faces threats from pollution and habitat disruption. The Union advocates for improved water quality and the installation of safety measures like under-bridge pathways to safeguard the otters.

Conservation efforts are supported by cross-border collaboration with French authorities, emphasizing the importance of monitoring and habitat protection. The otters' resurgence underscores the need for continued protection to ensure their lasting presence in Saarland.
