Chinguetti: A Heritage at Risk

Chinguetti, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Mauritania, faces a dire threat from desertification. This ancient city, renowned for its invaluable Quranic manuscripts, is increasingly surrounded by encroaching sands.

Farmers and herders are struggling as the harsh climate, exacerbated by human activity, destroys vital vegetation and disrupts traditional livelihoods. Despite initiatives like the Great Green Wall and various NGO projects aimed at reforestation, challenges persist.

Sandstorms and persistent drought continue to plague the region, with only a meager annual rainfall of 2.5 centimeters over the last decade. The fate of Chinguetti hangs in the balance, as its rich history risks fading into the desert.
