Warning strikes in Germany's public sector are escalating as trade unions, including Verdi, Komba, and others, push for better working conditions and pay. These strikes have significantly impacted various services, particularly in the Lower Rhine region, where around 1500 union members rallied in Krefeld.
The unions are demanding an 8% salary increase, at least 350€ more monthly, and three additional days off. Their growing frustration could lead to a widespread indefinite strike if their demands are not met.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the strikes have affected daycare centers, job centers, and public services, with plans for continued action. The ongoing negotiations between BVG and Verdi highlight the tensions within the Berlin public transport sector.
After a two-day strike that disrupted services, negotiations resumed, but Verdi rejected BVG’s offer, citing it as a reduction in real wages. The union is contemplating further strikes if its demands are not addressed.
Additionally, major airports in Hamburg, Munich, Düsseldorf, and Cologne/Bonn are facing disruptions due to a 48-hour strike initiated by Verdi, affecting various airport operations. The unions are advocating for better pay, reduced stress, and improved working hours.
As negotiations continue, the potential for more strikes looms large, indicating a robust demand for change in the public sector.
