Japan Faces Devastating Wildfires
Japan is currently grappling with its worst wildfires in over three decades. The blazes have ravaged approximately 1,200 hectares, particularly in Ofunato, Iwate, prompting the evacuation of over 1,000 residents.
Tragically, the fires have resulted in one fatality and damaged more than 30 buildings. The scale of this disaster surpasses the notorious Kushiro wildfire of 1992. In total, 1,700 firefighters are engaged in battling the flames, with additional fires reported in Yamanashi Prefecture.
This summer marks a concerning trend, as Japan has experienced around 1,300 wildfires in 2023, amidst record heat and low rainfall in previous months.
