Verdi Strikes Disrupt Key Services Across Germany

Verdi, the prominent German trade union, has initiated significant strikes affecting various public services across Germany. The strikes primarily target airports, hospitals, and kindergartens, creating widespread disruption. At 11 airports, including major hubs like Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn, about 25,000 security personnel are participating in a full-day walkout. This action aims to increase pressure on the Bundesverband der Luftsicherheitsunternehmen amidst stalled labor negotiations. Verdi's demands include improved working conditions, such as 30 days of vacation, additional leave for shift work, and free choice of doctors for mandatory health checks.

The strikes have led to over 3,400 flight cancellations, affecting approximately 510,000 passengers nationwide. In Berlin, the strikes extend to city services, with the Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR) halting waste collection and other essential operations. Verdi seeks an 8% wage increase and more days off for public service employees. Employers have yet to present a viable counteroffer, deeming the union's demands financially unfeasible. As negotiations continue, significant service disruptions remain a pressing concern for the public.
